Slip and Fall Accidents

October 22, 2008 |

The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control estimates that in 2004 alone, more than eight million people were injured in slip-and-fall accidents. Slips, trips and falls account for up to 20% of all workers' compensation costs each year. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that 15% of incidental workplace deaths are caused by slips, trips and falls -- second only to traffic accident deaths.

Slip-and-fall accidents can occur nearly anywhere - on public or private property, indoors or out. Common causes of slip-and-fall accidents include adverse weather conditions, slick or slippery flooring, poorly lit or unmarked pathways or stairs, obstructions on the floor or walkway, uneven or unbalanced flooring or sidewalks, rippled carpets, potholes, and more. Many people attribute their fall to their own clumsiness or lack of attention. But property owners and/or their tenants are responsible for maintaining a safe premises and warning visitors of potential hazards - their failure to do so can make them liable for injuries suffered by a visitor who slips and falls as a result of their negligence.

Injuries resulting from slip-and-fall injuries vary tremendously. Often the injuries are relatively minor, requiring minimal medical attention and healing fairly quickly. But sometimes, the slip-and-fall victim suffers a more severe injury - brain injury, spinal cord injury, burn injury, or even death.

The damages available to victims of slip-and-fall accidents depend upon numerous factors, including the facts and circumstances of the accident, the severity of the injury, and much more.
